How Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping the security sector

AI (otherwise known as Artificial Intelligence) is currently the word on everyone’s lips. From self-driving cars to medical diagnostic tools, recent developments in AI have had a huge, far-reaching impact – and the security sector is no exception. So, how is AI reshaping how we protect property?

AI-powered CCTV cameras

The use of AI isn’t new to the CCTV surveillance industry; facial recognition technology has been around for well over a decade. But as technology becomes more sophisticated in solving problems, detecting patterns, and identifying threats, its advantages are enhancing security operations in new and exciting ways.

How it’s used

Video surveillance typically involves the installation of cameras in strategic locations so that security operators can monitor the site for any dangers.

By integrating AI, security staff gain the ability to watch over the premises without having to deal with nuisances such as wildlife, foliage, and environmental false alarms. AI can detect threats, filter out false alarms, and notify operators of real intruders so they can take appropriate action in real time – ensuring staff are as productive as possible.

PSM Traces AI

In 2022, we launched our very own Artificial Intelligence technology – PSM Traces AI.

It’s a video analytic platform that uses algorithms to automatically detect if a person or vehicle has set off the motion sensor, differentiating between a real alert and a false alarm. This means only genuine threats are transmitted to our CCTV Control Room Operators.

How it enhances our security

An excessive number of alarms can diminish the ability to react to critical events, which is known as alert fatigue. So, on sites prone to frequent false alarms, our innovative AI filtering technology improves the efficiency of your system by making sure our operators maintain a quick response to real intruders.

When it comes to traditional false alarm handling, the offending detectors are usually isolated until the problem causing the alarm subsides. This means that intruders could be missed by the isolated detector.

However, with PSM Traces AI, every alarm is assessed by either an algorithm or a human, resulting in a much safer and secure way of filtering false alarms.

As AI continues to evolve and more businesses adopt AI-powered processes, we expect to see even more promising results in relation to crime.

What will the future hold?

The field of Artificial Intelligence is changing and growing rapidly. According to the US International Trade Administration, the UK AI market is worth more than £16.9 billion – and is expected to grow to £803.7 billion by 2035.

As tech giants step up investment and AI technology grows in sophistication, the ability to predict and detect potential security threats will be more accurate. By continuously analysing patterns and trends, it can learn to recognise unusual behaviour and identify threats before an incident occurs.

Final takeaway

Like across many industries, the rise of AI has triggered a wave of both positive and negative opinions. While Artificial Intelligence is only capable of so much and cannot think like we can, it is already revolutionising many aspects of our lives – though many argue a human touch is still essential.

That’s why, at PSM, we’re proud of our winning combination – pairing intelligent technology with our quick-thinking team.

From future-proofing our tech to introducing our game-changing shift patterns for improving CCTV operator productivity, we’re always looking at ways to improve the efficiency and quality of our service.
